Using Credible Sources in Your Essays and Assignments
Due to the growth of the internet there’s no shortage of material to reference from when writing an assignment or essay. However, just because something has been published on the internet doesn’t make it credible.
The term ‘credible’ means that the material is trustworthy – it can be relied upon in an academic environment. In order to be credible, an article must have 2 things: an author, and a date when it was published. This way any facts or theories can be attributed to someone.
One common mistake students make is to cite Wikipedia as the source of a piece of information. While Wikipedia is a great place to do research, it is not completely credible. This is because anyone can edit the articles – work is not attributed to an author.
Books, journals and newspapers have both an author and a published date by default most of the time, however it is often forgotten or not included on websites. This information is required in your bibliography, in either APA, MLA, Chicago, or harvard referencing format. If an article doesn’t have these 2 things, it may be worth thinking again about including it in your research.
